South Africa is larger and more varied than many first-time visitors expect. Cape Town, the Winelands, the battlefields and the Greater Kruger are not neighbouring attractions. A good itinerary gives each place enough time and keeps the travel between them sensible.
Choose a clear focus
Start with the experiences that matter most to you. History, food, walking, wildlife and family time each produce a different route. Once those priorities are clear, the rest of the trip becomes much easier to plan.
Stay longer in fewer places
Two or three nights in a place usually produces a better trip than changing hotels every day. It also creates room for weather changes, local recommendations and an afternoon without a schedule.
